Lest We Forget

Dedicated to my grandfather who served in World War II, my uncle who served in Vietnam, my brother whose years in the Special Forces took him on "training missions" to places he still won't or can't talk about...to all who have answered their nation's call to duty...

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields.
John McCrae 1915

Wooow I will definitely steal that poppy photo! It is GORGEOUS! :)

And world wars ... don't even want to talk about it. They were bloody around here. (Including nazi camps)

Great photo.

Yes thanks to all the many people that lost their lives so we could enjoy the freedom we have today.

@John: I think we have not done a good job of making them feel appreciated lately.

@Poppy: Yesterday was a day to thank all those who helped put an end to the death camps. I started out only using my own photos but there are many beautiful ones on photobucket that I have been using lately. Click on the picture and it will take you to the original post where you can get the code and use it while giving the photographer credit.

@LL Cool Joe: And all the men and women who are still serving today. Thank you.

Thanks for the reminder. I didn't realize the lines "In Flanders Field" was written during WW1. Beautiful poppies.

You'd asked about shelters on the AT--in a previous post I had a picture of a double shelter along with another of my tarp camp: http://sagecoveredhills.blogspot.com/2009/10/hiking-north-from-harpers-ferry.html

Brothers in Arms - one of the best songs ever written - and so appropriate for yesterday. Thanks! On Mark Knopfler's new album there is a beautiful song written for his uncle, a piper who was killed in WWII.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today! It was great to hear from you. Yes, it would have been quite an adventure to go to Zambia. Some day!

@sage: Too bad WWI wasn't actually the war to end all wars like people said at the time. I hate hearing the body count on the news every night and I feel terrible for the innocent people caught in the middle. If I was an Iraqi mother with a wounded child, I'd hate America, too. Do those shelters keep you dry?

@Rebecca S.: I haven't heard anything from his new album. I'll have to Google it. You are welcome and thank you for visiting mine.
