When I Grow Up I Wanna Be a Writer

Am I the only one who is sometimes more entertained and inspired by commercials than by anything else on TV?

I remember when I was in elementary school I loved to write stories.  I created a series of them about a squirrel.  I created his mother, father, brother, sisters, friends, home, school...his entire life.  I would write about the trouble he got into with his friends, vacations he would take with his family, and how he celebrated holidays.  My mother was supportive at first, but my father hated it.  I was wasting time I should be using to do something productive.  Since I received nothing but ridicule, I stopped.  I remember writing a few plays in junior high and even attempting a novel in high school, but I hid it.  If I got caught, I pretended it was a school assignment.

Blogging has reminded me how much I love to write.  I think that should be my major.  I can't think of an industry where the ability to communicate wouldn't be a bonus.  Who knows, I might eventually write a best-seller...or become a travel writer.

My father doesn't get a vote.

If you thoughtit--Do it! Someones telling you something!

I recently saw a Burger King Commercial, and it was talking about say--Burger "A".

They had the GALL to put up a picture of a DIFFERENT BURGER for the ad, and in small print at the bottom it said something like,

1/3 lb Burger Pictured. I WILL NOT BUY from a place that uses deceit like that!

I was incensed!

Phew, I feel better!

Remember Funny Farm, with Chevy Chase? She wrote the children's book on the Squirrel? You had it done first---so there's your confirmation! LOL

I SAY 'GO FOR IT". My father stopped me from doing something I loved and it literally changed the direction of my life! Now- YOU can make the call!

Oh yes, you must write even if it's in a journal and say how your day went. Never give up my friend. Someone said that your eyes were the windows of your soul or something like that. So, maybe I'm just not wording this right, but as far as commercials my son (when he was a baby) would play while the program was on & soon as a commercial came on everything had to stop & be quiet, and he knew every jingle there was. Too funny! So you're not alone. Go for it! Then I can say "I knew you when..." too cool. Have a great day!

sometimes the ad's are little poems. But there is some very good writing for comedy in the US. Glee* has good ones. Last week this line was delivered between two cheerleaders, "Dolphins are just gay sharks", in that tone teenagers use when imparting facts. Not Monty Python* or Fr Ted*, but very near.

I would say go for it! You already have the talent for it and a travel writer would be right up your alley.

I hate it when folks try to stop people from doing what they clearly have a passion for.

I never watch tv, partly because of the adverts, but mainly because I find it dull.

I think everyone who blogs, has a book in them. Well most. :) Go for it!

I hope you (and me) can get a book published before there are no more books made out of paper :)

Blogging could be the jump to the beginnings of it for you!!!

That best seller is just around the corner - Remember us all ;0)

Just do it. The 'how to' books sell far more than fiction. I have published two non fiction and several fiction, hands down the 'how-to' books go best. If you want to be self published, please checkout 'Createspace.com'. YOu cannot beat the deal.
I was a professional story teller, writing was a big challenge without the hands and body language, it was hard to put that into words for me. But Go for it. It costs 'nothing' but time.

@Brian Miller: Lacing up my running shoes...

@Jingle: Thank you. You always leave such encouraging comments and they are appreciated.

@Buckeroomama: I will.

@That corgi: I'm always happy when I'm writing. That alone is reason enough to do it.

@Heff: I hate to think of you sweating and shaking in the corner muttering, "boobies..."

@John: Not only that, one of the stories I was writing in high school was about a bunch of girls that were partying at the beach and one of their friends drowned. Not wanting to get in trouble they left her body and told no one. But she wasn't really dead and they kept getting phone calls. The person on the other end said "I know what you did" then hung up. That was years before I Know What You Did Last Summer came out. Thieves!

@Sara Louise: They're the best thing about Superbowl Sunday. I would miss them, too.

@Unknown Mami: OK! OK! OK!

@Xmas Dolly: My writing books advocate keeping a blog or journal daily as a pre-writing exercise.

@Vince: I've never watched Glee. I may tune in one day to see what all the fuss is about.

@Heather: I've met far too many of those people. From now on, if they don't encourage me to reach my goals, they're out of my life.

@LL Cool Joe: I know I have several books in me. I need to learn how to get it out of my head and onto the page.

Jen said...

@Sage: Do you really think paper books will disappear completely? I hope not.

@blueviolet: It's definitely helping to keep the creative channels open. I could be a travel writer here on the blogs. I'd like to get paid for it one day, though.

@eternally distracted: I'll dedicate my first published novel to all of my blog buddies.

@jack: I purchase many more non-fiction books than fiction so that makes sense. A beginner's camping and outdoors guide aimed at women, maybe?

I would have been a writer, but back when I was concerned about making a living- writing didn't pay very well...

I really think that you're onto something about the outdoor guide aimed at women. Go for it!

As only what can be dreamed of, can become a reality, I'd like to wish you a wonderful night and a even nicer day, making it real.

@buffalodick: Does it pay well now? I think only for a fortunate few.

@Mama Zen: I'll write about all the mistakes I made. Those are usually entertaining.

@Minka: I will!

@tywo: I think you can earn a decent living doing photography. You may have to do weddings and baby photos to help ends meet at first, but it can be done. Go for it!

@athens: Very true. You first have to dream it, then achieve it.

@ak: Sometimes it has to just spill out on the paper all jumbled up and then be organized later.

@John: I don't think they really stole it...it's unlikely they dug through my trash in the 80's. I did think the similarities were interesting, though.

I wanted to be a writer, and was told to do something real as well.
years later, here I am . living and pursuing my real . Feeding my soul so it can live a life well.

Jen said...

@deb: Feeding the soul is as important as feeding the body. I'm getting started on that myself. Thanks.

Shame on your dad squelching your creative spirit. I can understand your bitterness. I was lucky. My parents have pestered me for years about writing: "What are you writing these days?"
I love the idea of the squirrel stories.
By the way. I like your business cards, too. They are simple and effective, I think.

Jen said...

@Rebecca S.: I gave my first one away yesterday. I think they will serve their intended purpose well.
