Stranger Danger

Image from Flickr.

A young man (who I'd never before met or even seen) approached me in the parking lot this afternoon wanting to know if I could do him a favor. "What kind of favor?" I asked.

"I live on B___ Rd. Can you give me a ride?"

"I can't give you a ride. I don't know you."

"I'm a nice guy."

"And if you were an axe murderer planning to chop me to bits I'm sure you'd tell me."

When I got inside my daughter asked what he wanted. "That's weird," she said. "If he can walk over here, he can walk back."

That is weird. I'm glad my daughter recognizes that.

I hope you reported him to the police. Some other woman may not be as astute as you and your daughter.

Great to see that your daughter is so aware of her surroundings.

Always a weird situatuin. It's better to look a bit paranoid in order to be safe than to look cool and nice and possibly dead ...

Very odd indeed, did you call the police or an ambulance. He seems a bit ill or short of the shilling. But certainly I would not have given him a lift either.

It's always the nice guys...

I'm a nice guy - as if he's going to admit to being a bad guy!

Only a few per cent of people are actually dangerous - but when you give one of them a ride, that's 100% for you. Glad you're okay.

I guess you had to be there... I tend to make judgement calls on situations when I'm there and can see the intent...

Interesting.... as for me, I'm probably more like Buffalo, depending on the situation, but I would never want my daughter to give him a ride.

I did not call the police because I have no evidence that he intended to do anything but ride in my car. The little voice in my head said don't so I didn't. The voice keeps me out of trouble when I listen.

Besides, doesn't he have any friends he can call? And it's only a mile and a half or so. He looked young and healthy. Like my daughter said, "He walked over here. He can walk back."

I would NEVER want my daughter giving random guys a ride. Why let her see me doing it?

I had boys...if I had a daughter, the poor kid would have been guarded like Fort Knox.. I warned the guy who married my niece..he understood, and I like him better than her these days.. there are good men in this world.

we can never tell,
but your daughter is smart enough to say no.
what a post.
Best wishes for your day!

Wise decision - probably an idea to report it just in case someone else isn't as smart as you.

Hmm, tough call, but I love your answer, "And if you were an axe murderer planning to chop me to bits I'm sure you'd tell me." So true. Like the others said, we can't ever tell, but honestly, it's not worth the risk.

Smart of your daughter, too!

Creepy and scary. Good to know your daughter has a level head

I would probably have asked him the reason he needed a ride, and if it seemed legit and necessary point out the nearest phone booth where he could call a cab, and if he had no money, well, I might offer to help with that if he looked young and vulnerable enough. But yes, better safe than sorry!

Jen,

Just a thought---and tell me if I'm meddling--you obviously have a great head on your shoulders and I imagine can take care of yourself as well.

Is there any dangers, real or perceived that you may encounter in Geocahing? When we hunt, fish, etc. we always leave a start/finish/destination time with someone....ie.....come looking if we aren't back or have called by>>>>>

I'm sure you've thought about this--but just in case......

Overprotective of my Peeps,

John

Hurry up and get to the one by that Crane--beautiful bird by the way? Not sure about the Cardinal either, although the Dull red may be on the female!????
