Your Bible is Broken

Yes, she's crazy...

The above has always been one of my favorite scenes from the TV series Firefly because it reminds me of all the people in my life who have tried to convince me that God cannot exist by pointing out inconsistencies - real or imagined - in a book written by men.  I don't care if you think you can prove something in the Bible didn't happen.  (Plus, it's funny.  I love River.)

What made me think of that?  I've met a new friend that has me thinking I need to find a church and start attending services again.  I haven't been in a long time because the minute they start preaching hatred or prejudice, I have to leave.

I also believe in the big bang theory, that the earth is millions of years old, and in evolution.  A lot of people try to tell me I can't be Christian and believe those things.  That's ridiculous.  If we let the church dictate all of our scientific beliefs, we'd still be teaching our children that the planet is flat and the sun revolves around the earth.

When I first met my friend, I told her I couldn't hang with religious people because they thought they were better than everyone else.  I can't be friends with someone who is constantly judging or attend a church where sinners aren't welcome.  Her response was, "We're all sinners.  If we weren't, we wouldn't need Christ."  Maybe I'll tag along with her one Sunday morning...

Can't hurt to tag along. I dislike churches (preachers) who constantly preach negative.
It is a strange thing how we get hung up on the past and the future. For sure there are differing aspects to creation, as long as we know God is control, basically that is what counts. NO ONE can tell what happened 15,000 or 15,000,000 years ago. We can speculate and we can believe.
Down inside I know the earth is over 6,000 years old, common sense tells that. The most serious thing for us today, is TODAY!

Take care, one more day in HOT VEGAS 100+.

That's where non Christians get it wrong. I'm a Christian, and the reason I'm one is because I'm a sinner, I know I sin but by having a faith in Jesus my sins are forgiven. That doesn't make me better, it just make me realise I screw up, I get things wrong time and time again, but God will forgive me.

Back in the day...I got more pu**y in the churches than in the Bars (well, I never went to bars, but..), anyway...

I stopped being religious/church-goer several years ago. I have more knowledge about the Bible than most any "christian", and that includes your celebrity follower-LLCoolJoe (isn't he that black rapper/actor??).

I've always thought the words of Jesus when he said 'Love God and love your neighbour as you love yourself', pretty much says all than needs to be said.
Why exactly some twinky feels compelled to complicate what JC said with such pure simplicity is beyond me.
And honestly, you might be far better off buying a Bible -and it hardly matters which version unless you are a scholar of Greek, Aramaic and Latin- and setting up your own prayer group. You'll not be the first in Texas to go that route.

As a self-confessed wildly liberal Christian, I've noticed that those who do the most harm to Christianity are often those who are most desperately trying to push their particular "brand" of it onto others.

Anne Rice, author of the Interview with a Vampire series, recently created a bit of a kerfluffle saying she was leaving Christianity. She's a bit of a headcase, admittedly, but she had a good point: "...following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been or might become."

And what Vince said.

Not a christian though I am maried to one, I laugh it off when people judge me but hate it when they judge Husband dearest for being married to someone who doesn't believe in God. As you say so much intolerance and hatred is carried out in the nmae of religion. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I'm a Christian and I've never had problems accepting evolution, etc. I just don't see that it has to be "one or the others". I can accept science and religion together.

Unfortunately there are lots of judgemental folks out there... religious or otherwise. I do attend a church on a regular basis, but that doesn't mean I necessarily agree with every little tenet my particular church/denomination advocates. I appreciate "Christian fellowship", but it's really more about my relationship with Christ/God.

I wish you well in your search, whatever it entails.

I am a Christian, I know because my mom had the deepest faith in god and that rubbed off on me. I do not like religion shoved down my throat. , and I steer clear of people like that. You got some excellent comments . Do what feels right.

Churches that promote hatred and violence are not any place I would want to be. I always get mad at the preaching that if you are not this religion then you were going to hell. Many religions do that and I think it is soo stupid.
The sience vs religion always gets me, maybe that is why I quit going to church.

You probably believe Darwin got it right too. But if he did, how does that explain our universal penchant for gods, dogma and ritual? Christianty is just the second last religion to be invented, of dozens existing now and thousands that rose, flourished and died over at least fifty thousand years. So why do we do it?

These questions deserve answers in this world of increasing religious polarisation.
Terry the Koran burner has his Muslim counterparts who together seem hell bent on starting world war three, which few will survive, but that's covered by Darwin too. It's in the fossil record. Go River!

Sounds like a nice friend. Check out a Presbyterian Church (make sure it's Presbyterian Church USA.... I'd be leary of the Presbyterian Church in America, of which you have more than a few down there, as they are still arguing over 6 day creations and don't allow women to be in leadership positions). Blessings.

Wanted to stop by, and thank you for stopping by me, and leaving such a sweet comment, but I looked around, and I really like your blog. Only thing is I was taught that there is three things you don't talk about, and that is Religion, Politics and Sex! So, how do you like Chocolate? ~snicker-snicker~ Have a great weekend!

I've never seen Firefly. I need to start attending services again too. It's hard with a working Hubby and four kids. I enjoy going to church, but I'm a big believer in "thou shalt not judge, lest ye be judged" or something like that.

Your friend is right...we are all sinners and we need a savior. That is why we need Christ and the Cross. I hope that you start visiting her church. It is not about religion it is about the relationship.

I love Firefly :D And if I'd found a church that was more friendly/accepting, I might still go...

Well, guess what! I'm an atheist and would like to hang out with you. :-)

You're the kind of Christian that adds to my understanding of religion, especially from a social and cultural perspective. Loved the clip, but never heard of the show. Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

I'm not a believer, I do study the universe and it does not matter which particular aspect or theory you believe, there is still always room for a god. There will always be something we strive but do not understand and there lies god!

Thank you for visiting me :)

I do appreciate it.

I hope you find the answers your soul desires. Just know that we all have a choice and something as important as choosing a faith, should not be forced upon anyone.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

You've nailed my own theory very nicely in this post. I feel the same. There's something out there which can't be defined nor segregated to one religion or belief. I don't usually comment on anything this intimate, except when I totally agree with it! :)

I resent the idea that we all "need" someone divine because we're all "sinners." Who defines sin anyhow? Some of the loudest "Christians" I know are some of the biggest assholes I know. Then again, I have a good friend who is a pastor and is awesome.

I try to avoid defending my beliefs, which seem to be working for me.

Best wishes in your search for the peace that passes all understanding.
