Late

Mom, wait up for me., originally uploaded by aratway.

Remember the days when our kids couldn't stand for us to be out of their sight? Remember hearing, "Look at me, Mom. You're not looking! Hey! Wait for me!" I miss those days.

Last night, during the storm I expected my daughter to come home right after her Cosmotology late lab. I called after 8 because she wasn't at home and learned she was at the mall trying on clothes. "No problem, I just thought you were in a ditch full of water or in someone's trunk. That's all."

Today I expected her home around 3. I called after 4 and learned she was cutting a friend's hair. Does she think that because her curfew is 9 that means she doesn't have to let me know she's not coming straight home? That I'm not going to care where she is?

Thankfully, we didn't get any more rain today so at least I didn't have to worry about her driving during a tropical storm.

Late, is perhaps the one word used by a woman that in almost any context will put the fear of God into any man. And oddly enough, * I am late(first-person singular)the day she tells him she is baking a bun * you are late(second-person singular)screeched at a decibel level with legs akimbo 9ish months later. And from that day onwards, the rest of them.
* he, she is late(third-person singular)
* we are (first-person plural)
* you are (second-person plural)
* they are (third-person plural).
And seeing it in my list this morning I had that same little feeling.

Ahh, your little girl is growing up! Sad to inform you that this worrying thing goes on...and on... No matter how old they get, they are still our little ones..but we all learn to get used to it....eventually!

She's lucky that you care so much.
By the way your picture today reminds me of me and my mother when we used to go out walking, except that our tails were much shorter - even so it's not a bad likeness of mum.....

All the best, Boonie

You never stop caring about where your kids are. I found the hardest thing with my 15 year old is letting her go, giving her freedom but making sure she stays safe. It's a tough one!

Only as a parent now I understand what my own mother went through when I was growing up. I totally side with you on this one.

Greetings from London.

I guess once a parent, always a parent. It seems to me you don't stop worrying you just worry about different things.

smiles. they grow and change and sometimes it is hard for us to grow with them...

I agree with Brian. Its hard for us to keep up with them as they grow. You and she will have to come to a compromise on reporting in.

SO true! The grow up. SOmeone asked how many times we tell our kids I love you. I though for a moment...It depends on the kid. My baby is with me all day so she'll get more I love yousss than the bigger ones. However they've all had their turn

I am 37 and still call my mom and tell her. She has trained me well. (she lives next door so if she thinks I should be home, she worries!)

I still worry about mine and they're all grown up. Just bigger problems now.

It took me being on the other side to understand that "call and let them know" business.

It is my kids that call on their kids. I am past that stage!!!!

Makes me wonder how I'll feel when my girls become more independent.

I like the elephant picture. :)
When my 3 girls are with me, people have commented how we look like the mama duck and her ducklings.

I am a grown woman, with children of my own, and my mother still worries about me. It's a mothers right and instinct to worry about their children. "do me a favor, if you are going to be late, call/text me." Good that the weather has improved.

I still have another year or so before I'm at that point. Not sure how I'll be. Right at this very moment, I think I'll be too busy enjoying the silence...

How old is she? Cosmotology sounds like she of college age... But a 9 o'clock curfew seems like she's in highschool?

I cant wait til my boys can all drive themselves. yay!

Just wait it will be your turn soon. My mom gripes and complains cause us kids are always wanting to know where they are! LOL! The roles have been reversed!

She's 17. Her high school offers a cosmotology program. She'll be able to take the state board and get her license upon graduation.

Our kids think they can manage without us but they don't know how worried we are once they don't get home as expected! Mother's instincts always work i guess Jen!

But they start to be responsible in situations like that! CHeer up, she will be fine. Just a constant follow-up on phone would settle your worried thoughts and feelings!

With a kid being just three years of age, this might be a bit early for me to worry about, yet ... ;)
Guess that those mobile phones enable additional freedom. Always a safe road ahead for you all, I'd like to wish you a wonderful Friday.

I would just tell her, straight out, that you would like her to call you just so you know she's okay. It's not about control, but just that you worry.

I still get to hear "Look at me Mom" I will miss it when I don't hear that anymore....

First of all why would you worry? you know I am all right!!!!! Funny how as long as they know they are all right, they figure you know.

I think she just doesn't think about it. It's not her job to worry about her, that's your job.
