Teardrops

...of the camper variety...

Paul'sTeardrop Camping Trailer Hillsboro, NM

I want one!  They have sleeping space with a few storage cabinets inside, and the back opens up to a pantry / kitchen area.  They are small and light enough to be towed by small cars and large motorcycles.  They can be pushed by hand into an RV spot for those of us that are not so good at backing in.

This guy built his own.  There are instructions available on the web.  I wish I was talented enough to build one of my own.  Or knew someone who could help me build one that wouldn't fall apart the first time I hit a pothole or a speedbump. The ones for sale at RV dealerships cost at least $5000.  That's not in the budget.

This one, built by a woman, is much prettier: http://www.desertteardrops.com/lucero/

Those are cute.

nice looking, but I drive a truck with a cab and a thick foam pad in the back :)

@Brian Miller: Me too! Those look very cool, just not $5000 cool.

@Christiejolu: Aren't they? I'd paint mine purple. Too bad I don't have a garage or a backyard so I can attempt to build one.

@sage: If it's too windy or rainy to pitch a tent, the back seat of my car works quite well, too. If I could find one for under $1000, I would buy it.

A cute little thing for one person, but I think my three teenagers would fight over the sleeping space! I've always wanted a tent trailer, but we are still camping in tents and that is fine too (I double up the thermarests now).

I have never been into camping, but that thing looks pretty cool :-)

@Rebecca S: I don't think it was meant for more than 2 people (who like each other a LOT). Your boys can stay in the tent while you kick back in comfort.

@Sara Louise: I love camping because you get great views for a low price. Those little things could be parked just about anywhere. That would be very cool.

So cute! I like it :) You have everything you need and at the same time you don't have too much .. :)

Looks like a Smurf Airstream! Could be towed by a clown car... HeeHeeHee..

Jen said...

@Poppy: Plenty of room to bring everything without taking up space in the cab of my car!

@buffalodick: I'll make sure I don't paint mine blue.

I love these! A long time ago there was an exhibit of them at SF MOMA. Oh, you should have seen them! Amazing!!! Made me want a few.

They are super cool :) I don't even go camping and I want one! Super cute!

Jen said...

@unknown Mami: I wish I could have seen them.

@Smileyfreak: Maybe if you owned one, you would become a camper.

@Poisonn Amour: I looked into renting for a day or two, but you could get a comfy hotel for the same price. I guess I'm just not going to get one in the near future. :(

So cute and doll-like. Whatever mode of camping you decide on you should take a camping trip to San Elijo Camp Ground in Cardiff By The Sea. (San Diego, CA). It's just down the next town from me and everybody loves it there. Right on the ocean with a great beach and amazing views. There is a camp store and across the street is a laundry mat, a fantastic grocery that has a great organic fruit and vegetable selection and a deli. There and lots of restaurants and frozen yogurt places. You can have campfires there and the best part — clean bathrooms!

@Cottage by the Sea: I might add San Diego to my roadtrip and was looking for campground possibilities. Thanks for the suggestion!

Cute and easy for one person. I hope you can find one in your budget.

@Heather: Some time in the future maybe. I want to buy a kayak, a mountain bike, and more hiking gear first. I can get all of that for less than the price of the camper which I really don't need. It's on the wish list.

I always love having something like this behind me to nap in or just carry some stuff around like earthquake supplies. We always worry and we're never ready.
I saw Home Depot had some ready made aluminum utility trailers with ranging prices. One could very easily cut out some sterafoam and fit it in and then sew up some canvassing used for covering a painters floor (They sell it for 20 dollars for a room sized sheet)Sew that around the sterafoam so it doesn't fly apart after the first rain and the glue for some reason comes off.
Spray the canvass with water repellant or some other paint and voila a trailer you can use for camping and or as a utility tool. The room you made is easy to pull on or off at will.:)

@A Lady's Life: That's an interesting idea...but I'm back to the same problem I'd have if I wanted to build a teardrop of my own...they sell kits if I had the talent or the space.
