He's Back

Make no sound, tip-toe across the floor
If he hears, he'll knock all day

  - Men at Work

Last night, there was somebody knocking on the door again.  I tried to look through the peephole, but I'm too short (5'1"), so my daughter (5'7") took a turn.  "I can't see anything.  The porch light is out.  All I can see is black."

Not wanting to answer the door if we were not expecting anyone and couldn't see who it was, we ignored him.  We were tip-toeing around and whispering like we forgot to buy Halloween candy, trying not to make any noise.  He kept knocking for at least 20 minutes.  No wonder my daughter was scared.  He left another PI card.  Did I mention the name on the front is not the same name he scribbled on the back?  The phone number is different, as well.

Today - more loud knocking.  This time he left and then came back.  He also started pounding on the door across the hall and left a card on both.  These are different cards, though.  He left not PI cards, but Texas Process Server business cards with the name that was on the back of the PI cards.  Sound shady yet?

Both times I was served before - divorce papers and when my ex sued for custody - a constable delivered the papers.  What does a Texas Process Server deliver?  Why doesn't he answer the phone or return calls explaining the nature of his visit?  And why is he trying to involve my neighbors?

This doesn't pass the 'smell test'. Glad you didn't open the door. Call the police and tell them about this suspicious character. Ask if there are any known crimes related to this scenario.

Well, I had an experience like this, and as shady as it seemed, it was legit. The PI was hired by my ex's attorney to serve me with legal papers. I'm not sure why he didn't have the sheriff do it, but whatever. And, the PI acted very shady, because the idea is you are going to try your darnedest to not get served, so he's got to be wily and "trick" you into accepting those papers. Might not be the case for you, of course, but that's how it went down for me. I did avoid him for a while, but one of the kids answered the door when he appeared during a blizzard. Not kidding!

Cant you call the cops to have him removed?
I wont answer the door to people I dont want to talk to (sales people) but damned if I'll tiptoe around in my own house. I bang around jus so they know Im there and ignoring them..

I think I would call the authorities, too. Maybe even take his cards by the police station and ask the desk clerk if they are familiar with him.

Call the cops. If it's legit, he can deliver during the day!

Okay, I thought this was going to be about that cowboy from Wyoming who traded in his chaps for speedos... Like the others said, call the police.

I'm echoing everyone else as well - call the police. Even if he is legit (and I could see where he would be, because maybe he is trying to serve you with papers) this is bordering on harassment and you have a daughter at home. If he's not returning phone calls why should you be bothered to answer the door?

That or leave a note on your door saying "Hey asshole, how about you ANSWER YOUR PHONE and maybe I'll be obliged to answer the door."

What everyone else said - I would phone the police. He sounds dodgy.

SERIOUSLY?

Our process servers usually just pitch papers in the bushes outside the front door and leave it at that.

Yeah, as the others say, call the cops.

take good care!
