Internet Blues

I still have no internet in my new apartment. I tried to transfer AT&T, but received an email response stating that they did not service my new neighborhood. I thought I had Comcast cable, so I tried them next. The customer service rep couldn’t find my address. Next, I tried calling a company that sent me a flier in the mail. They don’t service this area, either. “Well, stop sending me mail then!”

Verizon sent me an ad, too. Should I try them next? Maybe I should just give up and utilize the free wifi available in the clubhouse next to the pool. This is not a bad place to spend an hour each day…

Jen, I'm having computer blues as my netbook died yesterday and I'm in Vietnam.... My other blog (for summer travels) is www.jeff-ridingrails.blogspot.com

I hope you soon recover from your internet blues!

I try not to disagree with Brian, but I have had Verizon for a few years now--no probs.

I hope you enjoy the surfing poolside in the meatime.

Not sure how I'd cope without the internet. Mine went down for 14 hours and I was climbing the walls!

I'd be down at the clubhouse all the time. :D

You've no internet at all. Or is it that you've just no broadband. The first, I would consider something of a human right. The second goes 'suck it up' the few things that you really need BB for like watching films and gaming can be done better on other things.
I expect that your telephone exchange is not BB enabled. Maybe it never will given that there are insufficient numbers drawing from it to make it economic, or maybe it's just that the company has yet to get to you. Either way, it's not the 'phone company you need to talk to but whichever company is providing the infrastructure for they are the only people with the answer.
At this stage, given you are in a city. It seems you will need to go with the satellite route with a dish etc. Might be no harm to get in contact with your local politicians. Bang the 'third world' drum in the city that ran the moon landings. Using words like 'backwards development', 'high end jobs migration', 'infrastructure deficit' Anyhows best of luck. And can you mount a weir in a canoe. I know you can in a kayak.
How's the kid doin.

Thats one of the main differences in telecommunications from there to here. We have just one set of infrastructure and any company can hook you up, you just choose the best product and service for you and your area.

Oh no! I'd go crazy without internet. But at least you have the option of the clubhouse by the pool. And that's a pretty nice option.

I was glad to see your comment last night and to find this post this morning. I was wondering what happened to you!!

I'll be interested to see how this pans out. I'm on satellite and I hate it, but it's my only real option and it certainly beats dial-up!

@sage: I'm going to check it out now. I love traveling vicariously when I'm unable to do so myself. I hear Vietnam is beautiful. Is there any resentment left for us Americans there?

@slamdunk: Verizon seemed really expensive, though. I'll save them as a last resort.

@LL Cool Joe: I've been too busy to miss it much up until now.

@Vince: I have nothing. I suspect it's just because I haven't found the right company yet.The kid is doing great. She's coming over to cut and color my hair tomorrow.

@Tempo: I thought that was what they were moving towards here. I thought they sued for the right to provide service...so where are they?

@Amy LK: I have to wait until dusk, then it's nice. It's very warm here.

@Bernie: Thanks. I'm sure I'll find something soon.

@Kelly: Does Dish Network provide internet service, I wonder? They keep sending me ads...

Check with your apartment management. Frequently, they enter into exclusivity contracts with internet, cable and other utility providers -- in exchange for a kick-back -- allowing only a single service provider within the complex (or making it very difficult/expensive) for tenants to use other providers.

I think Dish Network's ISP is Wild Blue. We have Dish Network for our TV, but our internet is Hughes Net, which I think is associated with the other big dish company (can't think of the name).
