The Mirror Lies

"Dangerous Passion", originally uploaded by Jade M. Sheldon.

Image from Flickr.
I've been watching Khloe Kardashian (on TV) workout twice a day and starve herself to try to lose imaginary fat for a photo shoot. Her sister put her in front of the mirror to try to show her it was in her head. How crazy must I be to relate to her? The image I see in photos and in the mirror never matches what others tell me they see.

When I first moved into my apartment, I thought I was going to have to hang curtains in the bedroom because one wall consists of floor-to-ceiling mirrored closet doors. I didnt think I could handle it.

I've finally learned to trust that if a man tells me he likes my curves, he's not just being nice. I hope I never again behave the way I'm watching Khloe behave...

P.S. I'm about to hit the road again. I'll continue the road trip posts and take good notes for the one I'm about to start. Sorry I've been MIA and haven't been able to comment on all of your posts lately, but if I don't go visit the real world once in a while I'll have nothing to write about. I'll be back soon.

be safe out there on the road...and i have known quite a few that have struggled with this...our self image can become so skewed by our culture..

What happened to the fifties when it was cool to have lovely curves. Aren't all the ancient paintings of woman, big and voluptuous? Why isn't that cool anymore. Sigh...

Anyway, have a great and safe time!

The curve thing with women is really quite simple. The availability of cheap methods of transmission for media.
It is very very recent that the tall leggy German/Swedish peasant became the ideal in the eyes of women. Note here I wrote women. Prior to this the ideal or to put it another way 'what women were jealous', was the wife of the richest fellow in town. And that would never have been the tall thin strong above mentioned peasant.
And from that Kardashian -I'm not even going to bother to google for if I do I will lose the comment- the name is from the Caucasus, probably Georgian possibly Armenian, so not a blond.
Which direction are you heading this time.

Im with Vince, to each their own because ALL women are beautiful in their own way...just as well because I've never met two men who have the same taste in women anyway.
Hope you have a great trip Jen and come back with more great tales.

That drawing could be used to illustrate Kafka's short-story, "The Hungry Artist." Have fun on the road. I was away for ten days... in another week, I'll head west for another 8 days.

I look inthe mirror and it says 'old and bald'. I feel my head and my shoulder ache, and say 'Yeah you are right, but the pain in the shoulder will go away just like my hair.' ha.

Take care and have a great day (and travels)

don't ever apologize about being MIA from posting or commenting; I think sometimes people get so wrapped up in blogs, they forget how to live life in the "real world". Good that you are taking the advantage to be out there and enjoying your road trips and other adventures; always good to read about them when you share them

Hot topic - women and our bodies - don't know if I want to touch it. :)
Seriously, I'm guessing that as athletic as you are, you're in good shape. I think I recall seeing some photos on past posts.
I try to focus on doing what I can do to have the best body that's possible for me, and accept the genes I was given. Difficult sometimes, especially after calories galore on vacation, but I get back to where I was on the scale.
Life is short...I don't have the energy for giving too much thought to what I see in the mirror.
Come on...don't you "really" think you're a babe! :)

I haven't had much blogging time over the last couple months either: school's out, children, vacation, etc. But glad to hear from you. Loved your comment on "the role of women" on my last post.

Hope to be able to check in with you more. Enjoy your adventures. :)

It must be incredibly painful to watch a loved one struggle with anorexia. While I would love to shed a few pounds, I'm generally pretty content with this body that's on loan to me. It's true that men really do think we're cute, in spite of all the lumps & bumps we see in the mirror.

I always think I look BETTER in the mirror than I actually do ... when I see photos of myself or (even worse) video, I cringe. But when you live in Hollywood like Khloe, I imagine you might feel fat if you aren't a skeleton like so many of those girls.

have a great road trip!

With all the exercise you do I doubt very much that you look anything but good. Don't know why women never like their bodies, I know I never like what I see.
Enjoy your time away.......:-) Hugs

I think we're more critical of ourselves than anyone else. We tend to see the tiniest flaws and become obsessed with it. I haven't been watching the Kardashians for a while. I hope there's reruns on this Khloe diet episode. Take care on your road trip and stay safe.

It is something lots of women struggle with!! Have fun on your trips!

I think that just as women have been conditioned to think being stick thin is the way to be, men have been equally conditioned into thinking stick thin women are the ideal.

Happy travelling.

When I look at pictures of myself taken in years past, I remember how ashamed I was of my looks at the time. Now I think that I didn't look so bad and I'm sorry that I was so down on myself. Especially now that I'm older and look really bad. Appreciate your youth and good looks now!

I am so with you on this...

I think most of us are hard on ourselves when we look in the mirror (or look at photos, videos, etc.).

Enjoy your next trip!
